CTI Summer Street Shelter

In Lowell, Massachusetts, Charters Brothers Construction partnered with Community Teamwork, Inc. to restore and transform a neglected 19th-century building into 19 units of supportive housing for families and individuals transitioning out of homelessness. The historic structure had endured years of vacancy, water damage, and fire.

Crews rebuilt deteriorated framing, reinforced roof systems, and carefully integrated new mechanical, electrical, and fire protection systems into the old framework—all while preserving original details like window openings and cornices. Uneven floor elevations demanded precise leveling and creative pathways for modern utilities, fire-rated assemblies, and accessibility. On a tight urban site with unsuitable soils and ledge, the team adapted civil designs, coordinated utilities, and maximized every square foot. Through close collaboration with CTI, city offcials, and inspectors, budget stewardship and value engineering kept the project feasible without compromising quality.

Completed in early 2024, 275-277 Summer Street now provides safe, modern homes while preserving a piece of Lowell’s history—a mission-driven effort that proves construction can build both community and hope.
