North Andover Police Department Carport
North Andover, MA
In June of 2023 Charter Brothers bid on and won the opportunity to develop a new carport for the North Andover Police Department. Despite the challenges of working on a constrained site at an active police facility, this municipal project was completed on schedule and on budget in April of 2024.
The new ~3,500sf pre-engineered metal carport structure, designed to provide much needed covered storage for ten police vehicles, included architectural concrete, smooth formed fished foundations walls, and hot dip galvanized structural steel with Galvalume Plus roof and wall panels. Overall, the scope included electrical work to provide power and lighting to the new structure, along with electrical, plumbing and gas provisions for a future attached garage building. Provisions were also made for future Electrical Vehicle charging stations and site work was required to complete the scope of work, which included new asphalt pavement, providing a clean break between existing and new pavement.
Among some of the challenges, the site had significant water infiltration issues due to sandy soil conditions and issues with existing drainage systems causing water infiltration into the existing building. Our construction team strategized with the design team and decided to waterproof the existing building and relocate existing site drains in the area to resolve any preexisting water infiltration issues.
Provisions were taken to provide protection to excavations within a steep slope with unstable soils, and before we wrapped up the project, significant testing and inspections of concrete reinforcement, concrete placement, soils compaction, and paving were completed, all to ensure proper construction per design requirements.
