Old South Meeting House
Portsmouth NH
Charters Brothers completed an historic restoration to the South Meeting House on Strawberry Banke in Portsmouth, NH. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the renovations were funded through City Council approval of Urban Development Action Grant funds.
The project required an extensive exterior renovation including removal and re-installation of the building’s bell tower, a new slate roof, decorative trim and cornice replacement, replicating cast iron snow fencing and original wind vane, exterior envelope renovations and a new exterior paint job. Structural repairs were completed to the building’s sills, floor joists, support columns, and other major components,
The bell tower was to be restored in place however, after discovering significant structural deterioration our team determined the tower had to be removed and properly reconstructed on level ground to provide this historic landmark with the craftsmanship it deserved. Despite the unforeseen condition, Charters Brothers worked with the city to meet the project budget goals while staying true to the necessary historical standards.

“The City of Portsmouth is very pleased with the outcome from the South Meetinghouse project. We have received a lot of good comments about the appearance of the building following the work completed by Charters Brothers Construction. There was nothing easy about this project, but CBC rose to the occasion each time something came up. CBC’s staff was knowledgeable, skillful at solving problems, and courteous to neighbors.”
