UNH Barton Hall Cooperative Extension Labs
Durham NH
In the spring of 2022 Charters Brothers successfully completed the adaptive reuse renovation of the UNH Barton Hall soils laboratory for the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture.
The project consisted of the renovation of approximately 3,800 SF of existing lab, classroom, and office space in to a new consolidated laboratory as well as ADA accessibility and life safety upgrades to existing egress paths. All new laboratory casework was procured for the spaces and energy code upgrades to the thermal envelope including spray foam insulation and new aluminum storefront windows were provided. Laboratory specific systems included a new dedicated outside air system and exhaust systems to support fume hoods, autoclaves, bio-safety cabinets, and laminar flow hoods.
Logistics was complicated by the lab being located on the second floor of an existing occupied building, so careful planning and coordination were required with the university and academic community to ensure that hoisting new materials and construction debris, as well as general site access, was not disruptive to their operations.
