UNH Central Boiler Plant Upgrades

In May of 2015, the University of New Hampshire selected Charters Brothers as their Construction Manager for upgrades to their Central Boiler Plant at the Durham campus.
The project involved the dismantling of a 1960’s built in place three story boiler and and installation of a state of the art 1200 hp tri-fuel packaged boiler system with the use of a 300 ton crane. The work was conducted on the extremely busy campus within an occupied 24/7 power plant facility.
Work also included the removal and deregistering of three 20,000 gallon number 6 oil storage tanks within an existing spill containment system, installation of engineered scaffolding and shoring within the facility, removal of the existing cast in place concrete roof 5 stories above grade, new structural steel and concrete, a new boiler with 40’ tall chimney, supporting electrical and controls. The work was fast-tracked and the boiler was online in time to heat the campus.
