UNH Gregg Hall Chiller Plant Replacement

Charters Brothers services were enlisted to undertake a chiller plant replacement at the Greg Hall laboratory building at the University of New Hampshire. The work was scheduled to be completed through the winter to align with the cooling off-season, with a strict requirement to be re-commissioned and operational so as to return cooling to the sensitive lab spaces before the following summer cooling season. Gregg Hall’s unique rooftop mechanical mezzanine architectural steel trellis cladding was required to be removed in order to extract the old chillers and install the new equipment. The upper level of Gregg Hall houses UNH’s extremely vibration sensitive genome mapping lab equipment, which required that any vibration generating activities in the mezzanine above needed to be carefully coordinated with the lab technicians. In addition to the twin 160 ton Multistack chillers and shrouding, the project included a new Grundfos pump skid, buffer tank, and associated chilled water piping and valves throughout the mechanical mezzanine space, which were carefully coordinated with a number of other MEP systems and building structural elements. The project also included mezzanine access upgrades, electrical, lighting, fire alarm and controls.
