Whistler House Museum of Art
Lowell MA
Charters Brothers was selected by Lowell Art Association and the City of Lowell Better Building Program for the Historic Restoration and Energy Upgrade to the Whistler House Museum of Art, the birthplace of painter James McNeill Whistler.
The project involved replacement of the original cedar clapboards, windows, detailed restoration of the existing custom trim, gutters, windows, architectural features, and a high quality paint job. It also included a new state of the art heating and cooling system, insulation, and custom interior storm windows.
Challenges included: working on an occupied museum in downtown Lowell, coordinating with the Lowell and National Historical Society, safety of the public, preservation of original historic details, protection of priceless pieces of art throughout the renovation, and weather.

“Last fall, we completed the largest major building restoration and energy conservation project of the almost 200 year old historic house. Charters Brothers Construction showed professionalism in every aspect of their work on our project. They were knowledgeable in the rules an restrictions set forth by the Massachusetts Historical Commission and the Lowell Historical Commission, which was of utmost importance to our organization.
From Brad and Adam Charters and their office staff to their foreman and contractors onsite, they handled the work with integrity and quality, while providing superior and respectful service, in an efficient and timely fashion. We could not have been more pleased with their work and would recommend them to anyone.”
